The Year 2026 Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat evident elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming seems particularly strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
