JP Morgan Requires Biometric Data for Headquarters Admission
The banking leader has told staff members assigned to its new corporate base in New York that they have to provide their physical characteristics to access the multi-billion building.
Move from Discretionary to Compulsory
The investment bank had initially envisioned for the registration of physical identifiers at its recently opened tower to be voluntary.
Nevertheless, workers of the leading financial institution who have commenced employment at the corporate hub since August have received emails stating that biometric access was now "required".
The Technology Behind Entry
Biometric access requires personnel to provide their fingerprints to gain access entry points in the main floor rather than swiping their ID badges.
Headquarters Details
The corporate tower, which apparently cost three billion dollars to construct, will ultimately serve as a workplace for thousands of workers once it is completely filled before year-end.
Protection Reasoning
The banking institution did not provide a statement but it is assumed that the use of physical identifiers for access is designed to make the building safer.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exemptions for certain staff members who will continue to have the option to use a ID card for access, although the criteria for who will use more traditional ID access remains unspecified.
Supporting Mobile Applications
Alongside the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the company has also released the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which serves as a virtual ID and center for employee services.
The platform permits users to handle guest registration, use indoor maps of the premises and arrange in advance dining from the facility's nineteen on-site dining vendors.
Industry-Wide Trends
The introduction of enhanced security measures comes as US corporations, especially those with major presence in New York, look to increase security following the attack of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in July.
The executive, the boss of the healthcare company, was killed in the incident not far from the financial district.
Additional Office Considerations
It is uncertain if JP Morgan plans to implement the biometric system for employees at its offices in other major financial centres, such as London.
Employee Tracking Developments
The decision comes amid discussion over the use of technology to observe staff by their organizations, including tracking physical presence metrics.
Previously, all JP Morgan workers on flexible arrangements were directed they are required to come back to the physical location on a daily basis.
Executive Perspective
The organization's head, the financial executive, has characterized JP Morgan's new tower as a "tangible expression" of the company.
The executive, one of the global financial leaders, recently alerted that the probability of the financial markets experiencing a decline was significantly higher than many financiers believed.
